“When asked about my choice to pursue teaching as a profession, I have often been questioned due to my background in the IT industry as a software developer and my involvement in launching two start-ups. However, I have found myself drawn back to the field of education because of the immense satisfaction I derive from witnessing a learner successfully write a piece of programming code that solves a complex problem for the first time. The excitement and empowerment they experience in that moment is what fuels my motivation to teach and learn. Observing them unlock their potential and utilize their knowledge to pursue their dreams and create a brighter future for themselves is what truly ignites my passion. Hence, in essence, as Christa McAuliffe stated in 1985, “I touch the future – I teach” (Robert T. Hohler, p. 155).”

01 教育背景 Teachers’ background

Raja Marwah, an ICT and Computer Science Teacher, holds a Master’s degree in Software Engineering. Recently, he completed another Master’s degree in Applied Learning and Teaching Secondary in Maths and Computer Science in Australia. He possesses a teaching license from the State of Victoria. Initially, he began his professional journey in the private IT sector before transitioning to the field of education. Throughout his career, he has accumulated a decade of teaching experience in various countries including China, Bulgaria, and Australia. Interacting with educators and learners worldwide has provided him with valuable insights to reflect upon how his education and previous experiences have shaped his teaching methodologies. Recognizing the increasing significance of creativity in education, he believes in treating it with equal importance as literacy, as expressed in the quote “creativity is now as important as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status” (How to escape education’s death valley 2013; Hathaway & Jaquith 2014, p. 26).

Through our secondary school computer science and technology courses, students with no prior foundation in computer science will acquire essential skills and knowledge in the field. They will learn programming fundamentals, problem-solving techniques, algorithmic thinking, and computational skills that are valuable across various industries. They will gain hands-on experience with programming languages like Javascript, Python,Java, etc., develop an understanding of data structures and algorithms, and learn about the principles and ethics of computing. By completing these courses, students will be equipped to tackle real-world challenges, design and develop software applications, analyze data, and make informed decisions using computational thinking. These skills will empower them to pursue further studies in computer science, explore careers in technology, and become effective problem solvers in the digital age.

“In our grade 8 class, we have a diverse group of students coming from various backgrounds. Despite a number of challenges, our classroom is filled with enthusiasm and a desire to learn.

What makes our high school student body truly unique is the wide range of skills and specializations that our learners like to explore. Each student brings their own set of strengths and interests to the table, creating a vibrant and dynamic learning environment. Moreover, their computer science knowledge varies across different levels, adding an element of diversity to our classroom discussions and activities. It is particularly exciting to see many of our students demonstrating strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. “In the near future, we have an exciting plan to design and host programming and software development hackathons. These hackathons aim to challenge students and provide them with a platform to showcase their skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. Our goal is to inspire and encourage participants to come up with authentic ideas that address challenging problems or tap into new opportunities in the field of technology.

During these hackathons, students will have the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals, forming teams that combine diverse talents and perspectives. The hackathons will provide a unique environment where participants can immerse themselves in a focused and intense atmosphere, fostering innovation and rapid prototyping.

The main objective of these hackathons is for students to build functional prototypes based on their ideas within a specified time frame. This hands-on approach allows them to apply their theoretical knowledge and technical skills to real-world scenarios. By embracing the challenges presented and working under time constraints, participants will gain valuable experience in problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork.

Furthermore, The Bebras Challenge is a prestigious international online competition that centers around computational thinking and problem-solving skills. It caters to students of all ages, including our high school students. By participating in this challenge, our students will engage in interactive tasks that demand logical thinking and algorithmic problem-solving abilities.

In addition to the Bebras Challenge, we are working towards building and nurturing our future students to get involved in various robotics competitions held at the international level. These competitions, such as the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), VEX Robotics Competition, and RoboCup, involve designing, building, and programming robots to tackle specific tasks or participate in competitive matches. By taking part in these robotics competitions, our students will not only enhance their technical skills but also develop teamwork, innovation, and critical thinking.”
